Free Image to Text Converter
Extract the text from a photo, screenshot or scan. Choose an image and the text appears below, ready to copy.
Recognition runs inside your browser, and no account is needed. Your image is never sent anywhere — open your browser's network inspector and check for yourself.
Drop an image here, or choose a file. JPG, PNG, WEBP and BMP up to 20 MB.
How it works
Optical character recognition (OCR) finds the shapes of letters in a picture and turns them back into characters you can search, copy and edit. Most online converters do that work on a server, which means uploading your document to someone else's computer first.
This page does it differently. The recognition engine is compiled to WebAssembly and runs in a background thread inside your own browser. The engine and the language model are downloaded from this site the first time you extract text and then cached, so nothing is fetched from a third party and your image never becomes part of a network request at all.
- Pick the language that matches your document.
- Drop in an image, or choose a file.
- Wait for the engine to load and recognise the text.
- Copy the result, or download it as a .txt file.
Getting the best accuracy
- Photograph the page straight on rather than at an angle.
- Fill the frame with the document and crop out the background.
- Use even lighting — a shadow across a line of text will lose it.
- Prefer a sharp photo over a large one; blur hurts more than resolution helps.
- Printed text is recognised far more reliably than handwriting.
Questions
- Is my image uploaded to a server?
- No. Text recognition runs inside your browser using WebAssembly, so the image you choose never leaves your device. No request made by this page contains your image, and there are no third-party requests at all — the recognition engine and language model are served from flexiscanner.com, downloaded once and then cached by your browser.
- Can I verify that for myself?
- Yes, and you should. Open your browser developer tools, switch to the Network tab, then extract text from an image. You will see requests for the engine and the language model, all to flexiscanner.com, and nothing carrying your image. This page also sends no analytics or error telemetry.
- Do I need an account?
- No. There is no sign-up, no email address and no usage limit. Open the page, choose an image, and copy your text.
- Which image formats are supported?
- JPG, PNG, WEBP and BMP images up to 20 MB.
- Which languages can it recognise?
- English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. Pick the language that matches your document before extracting — the wrong language will noticeably reduce accuracy.
- How can I get better results?
- Use a sharp, evenly lit photo taken straight on rather than at an angle, fill the frame with the document, and avoid shadows across the text. Printed text recognises far more reliably than handwriting.
- Can it extract text from a PDF?
- Not on this page — it takes images. To scan documents, extract text from multi-page PDFs and keep everything organised, use the FlexiScanner app.
Scanning more than one page?
FlexiScanner scans documents with your phone's camera, extracts the text on-device, and turns the result into a searchable PDF. Add cloud sync and you can search your whole library from any device.
